We were formed in 1962 and are the longest-established choir in Blenheim. Our official title is the Blenheim Choral Society, but we are known as the Marlborough Singers, and this is the name we use when performing.
Our choir has a mixture of ages and abilities, but we all have one thing in common: we love to sing. We meet once a week, for two hours, rehearsing for two shows a year, which we perform for family, friends and the Marlborough community. On occasions we also join in concerts with the Marlborough District Brass Band and/or the Marlborough Civic Orchestra.
We always welcome new members! No auditions are necessary.
We are very fortunate to have New Zealand baritone, ROBERT TUCKER as our musical director. Robert studied at the University of Otago, before moving to Perth, Australia, where he was an Emerging Performer at the Australian Opera Studio. We are very fortunate to have New Zealand baritone, ROBERT TUCKER as our musical director. Robert studied at the University of Otago, before moving to Perth, Australia, where he was an Emerging Performer at the Australian Opera Studio. After living and working in the UK for five years he returned to New Zealand where he performs regularly with New Zealand Opera and many other groups. He works hard to bring us up to a high standard.
We present two concerts a year. The mid-year one is more informal, with anything from modern classics to Gilbert & Sullivan. Our end-of-year concert, performed in Marlborough's ASB Theatre, is always a more important, classical work.
Welcome! We are delighted to have you come to sing with us. This tells you a little bit about what to expect from the choir.
REHEARSALS
We practise every Tuesday from 7–9pm at the Wesley Centre, 3 Henry St, Blenheim (see below). Please arrive in good time so we are ready to begin at 7 o'clock.
As a concert date approaches we may be called upon to have a couple of extra rehearsals, usually on a Thursday night. You will be notified of these changes in good time.
Members are encouraged to practise at home in between rehearsals. We will often provide useful internet links to the music as a whole or to help you learn different parts.
DO YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO READ MUSIC?
Being able to read music is useful but not a prerequisite to joining us. If there is something you do not understand regarding the music, please don't hesitate to ask the director or another choir member for assistance, preferably during a break or after the rehearsal.
SPECIAL TALENTS
If you have special skills or talents that the choir may be able to draw on (as a soloist or instrumentalist, conductor etc) we would love to know about them. Don't be shy!
